Westside 5, Prep 4

Thursday, March 26, 2009

Westside pitcher Ryan Tomlinson puts a tag on Mike Pritchard as the Prep baserunner tries to get back to 1st base after getting caught in a pickle.

Prep shortstop Max Huerter gets into position to field a ground ball off the artificial turn at Westside.

Tomlinson does his job by getting the bunt down to advance  the runner.

Westside third baseman Jory Goldstrom fields a ground ball at the hot corner.

Tomlinson gets a fist bump from his catcher, Bear Opitz after the third out of the inning.

In the next inning the battery mates' elation turns to concern as Prep's Pritchard ties it at four-all with a two-run bomb over the fence in right-center.

Westside left fielder Alec Williams leaps up for a ball hit to the warning track by Prep's Ryan Briggs but is unable to haul it in.

Williams comes back on the very next play to record the second out of the inning on a nice running catch as centerfielder Dylan Flott looks on.

Andrew Dahir drives a ball to right center  . . .

. . . where outfielder Mike Pritchard hauls it in for an out.

Leading off the bottom of the 7th with the scored tied at 4-4, sophomore second baseman Danny Dunn drives a sinking liner into the corner in left field.

Prep left fielder Kyle Kubat sprints over to attempt a play on the ball . . . .

. . . . and comes up just short on a effort to make a diving catch.  The ball goes to the fence in the corner of left field as Dunn sprints around the bases.  Third base coach Bob Greco rolls the dice and sends Dunn home.

As Dunn races home, the ball is relayed in from left field to the outstretched glove of Prep catcher Andrew Pryor.  Dunn goes into a headfirst dive to the plate in an effort to beat the throw and score the game-winning run.

In the ensuing melee at the plate, it's difficult to tell at first whether Westside has just won the game or squandered an opportunity to have their leadoff man at third with no outs.  [Photo by Steve Branscombe]

Pryor shows the ball to the home plate umpire who makes the call, "SAFE!"  Another chapter in the epic Prep-Westside saga ends suddenly on a dramatic and exciting play as Westside comes away with a 5-4 win.
