Coaches & Scouts: Welcome to the
BaseballNebraska Prospects Database. The data displayed below
comes directly from the
Prospect Registration Form that players fill out at the time
that they register for the Prospects service. We do not
independently confirm the accuracy of this information, however,
Prospects are asked to certify to us that the information that they
submit is accurate as of the time they register. Additionally,
for players under 18, parents also sign the form and attest to the
accuracy of the information provided. But, as always, "buyer
beware."
Most of the column headings below are
self-explanatory, however, a couple of the headings could use some
further explanation. The heading "Pos. 1" and "Pos.
2." refer to the Prospect's identification of his primary
defensive position and his secondary defensive position. The
column entitled "Pitching?" provides the Prospect's response to the
following question: "Do you desire to be a pitcher at the
collegiate level?" The prospects response options are:
(1) yes, pitch + position, (2) yes, pitch only and (3) no, position
only.
As you can see, the width of the table exceeds the
screen width. A horizontal slider bar at the bottom of the web
page allows you to scroll horizontally to view all information.
1. Sort. The data can be sorted by
any Field (heading) in ascending or descending order.
For example, if you want to sort the data by height with the tallest
players listed first, put your cursor on the "Ht" heading and click
on the black triangle that appears, which will bring up a menu with
the following options: Sort, Group, Filter, and Search.
Hover your cursor over "Sort" until you see the "Asc" and "Desc"
options. Select the "Desc" option to sort the Prospects by
Height in descending order (tallest to shortest).
2. Group. The data can be grouped
together by any of the criteria represented by the various headings
so that you can view the Prospects in groups. For example,
let's say that you would like to group the Prospects according to
Graduation Year. Put your mouse on the "Grad Yr" heading and
select "Group" (either 'ascending' or 'descending'). All of
the Prospects will be combined into groups according to their
Graduation Year. The same could be done for "1st Def. Pos.,"
"School" or any other criteria.
3. Filter. Above the Heading row,
you will see a horizontal white box following the word "Filter."
If you click in that white box, you can filter the list by any
response that a Prospect may have selected on the Registration Form.
You will see that the responses are listed below each bold Heading
in that list. You can use this filter to screen the data by
any ONE criteria. (To screen the data by more than one
criteria, you will use the "Search" process described below.)
For example, if you wish to see a listing of all players who desire
to pitch and play a position at the collegiate level, select the
criteria "Yes, pitch + position" under the bold "Pitch?" heading.
4. Search. The Search function
allows you to search by a single criteria or multiple criteria.
It is located next to the "Filter" function above the column
Headings. When you click on "Search" you will see various
"operators" above each heading with a white box below. You can
enter the search value that you are looking for in the white box and
then select the desired operator to create any custom query.
For example, if you wanted to find all left-handed pitchers in the
Class of 2009 who are 6 feet or taller, you would do the following:
(i) in the "Pitcher?" column, select the "contains" operator and
enter "yes" in the white box, (ii) in the "Ht" column, select the
operator "contains" and enter "6" in the white box, and (iii) in the
"Grad Year" column, select the "is" operator and enter "2009" in the
white box and then click on the "Search" button. You can set
all of your search criteria at the same time, or you can start by
searching by just one of the criteria and then continue to refine
the results until you find what you're looking for.

Early Bird
Specials - Scouting the Young'uns
April 1, 2009
It seems like we
have a nice crop of young players who are making some noise
at the Varsity level already this spring. Here's a
brief list, that I will supplement from time to time:
Jimmy Forsythe (Omaha Burke): this sophomore is
the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs football team and
gets high marks from head coach Kevin Koch who says that he
is very athletic and has a strong arm. Coach has him
listed as a pitcher on the season preview. I also hear
a lot about this kid from Mark Wetzel (www.blindguyhitting.com)
who has been working with him since he was 10.
Forsythe went 4-for-4 with 2 triples and a double on March
30 against Omaha North. I haven't seen him play yet,
but the early indications are promising and merit keeping an
eye on the kid.
Paul Morrow (Omaha Benson): This sophomore
pitcher beat Omaha Westside last summer as a freshman!
I saw him play about a week ago. He's a very heads up
ballplayer with fire in the belly. Good hitter, too.
Casey Gillaspie (Millard North): Younger
brother of Conor (in SF Giants organization) and son of
Mississippi State standout, Mark Gillaspie. The 6'3"
sophomore is starting at first base for the Mustangs and has
been hitting the ball well. He sprained an ankle last
week and will be hobbled for a couple weeks.
Dawson Porter (Millard North): At the other
corner of the Mustangs' infield is another 6'3" sophomore
with a good baseball pedigree: Dawson Porter, younger
brother of UNO standout Evan Porter (teammate of Conor
Gillaspie on the 35-0 2005 Championship team). Like
Casey, he's also hitting the ball well so far this spring.
Quentin Urban (Millard South): Urban, now a
sophomore, made the Patriots' varsity as a freshman, but got
a lot of playing time at the JV and Jr. Legion levels last
spring and summer. I saw him a lot on the Junior
Legion team, which he led to the #2 finish in the state
championship. Good pitcher, aggressive hitter, power,
athletic -- an all-around very talented and athletic kid.
He was a starter and a leading scorer on the basketball team
and suffered a broken wrist (non-throwing hand) late in the
season. He hasn't seen action yet this spring, but
should be ready to go soon. This kid is a winner.
Danny Dunn (Westside): Dunn is the only
sophomore on Bob Greco's roster and cracked the starting
lineup in game 2 when Greco shuffled his infield following a
first-game loss. He has been solid in the field and
productive at the plate as the #1-ranked Warrior's have gone
undefeated since Dunn became a starter. The
lefty-hitting Dunn had a walk-off inside the park home run
to beat Prep last week -- a sharply hit, opposite field
sinking liner into the corner. That was a big time
play in a big time game for a sophomore.
Taylor Anderson (Lincoln Southwest) Son of Husker
coach Mike. He impressed me defensively as a middle
infielder on Coach Bill Olson's fall UBA team.
Obviously, he's been well-schooled in the fundamentals.
Freshmen to keep an eye on:
-
Jake Placzek is the starting at shortstop for veteran
coach Jim Thomas at Papillion LaVista and handles the
bat well.
-
Austin Groth hit a home run for South Sioux City against
Gross on Monday. Coach Clint Brown says:
"Extremely live arm expecting big things from him" and "Utility
player can play all infield positions."
