Summary of Action Taken By NSAA Regarding Proposal C, Dealing with Contest Limits for Baseball April 3, 2009 |
|
From Jim Angele, NSAA Assistant Director
Here is a copy of the baseball proposal passed today at the Representative Assembly.
C. The proposal deals with: Yearbook: Article 3 Section:11.2.2 Page: 13 Manual: Baseball Pg: 5
3.11.2.2 No team representing a member school may participate in
more than addition to the state sponsored series of tournaments from the date of the first permitted contest to the close of the State Baseball Tournament. Participation in any baseball tournament shall count as
one date of the more than four tournaments, which includes the conference tournament. Cost Analysis of Proposal: None Rationale for the proposed change: Presently there is no limit to the number of baseball games that a school may play. This proposal places a restriction on baseball that is comparable to other sports yet takes into account the unpredictable spring weather. This proposal could potentially assist in minimizing loss of school time for the participants. The proposal would provide uniformity among all schools sponsoring baseball.

The majority of the discussion centered on the continued growth of baseball. Tom Ramsbottom, AD Elkhorn, said that limiting schools to 20 dates would make it difficult for new schools adding baseball to schedule games. Herb Kupfer, AD Omaha Duchesne Academy, said that the metro area schools wanted to continue to play out-state schools, like Columbus, Fremont Bergan, and Grand Island and a 20-date limit would inhibit their ability to travel out of the Omaha area.
Dennis Dolliver, AD Norfolk, said that schools in class A have always been able to work together and open their schedules in order to add new programs. "We did that when Class A added the new schools in Lincoln, North Star and Southwest, and Papillion-La Vista South," said Dolliver.
A representative from District II, then asked, if there was a different number the baseball schools could live with? A couple of folks then spoke up suggesting 23 or 24 dates. That is when Mr. Kenealy made his motion to amend the original proposal from 20 date to 24 date. That amendment passed passed 42-5-2. Then the proposal as amended passed 42-7. So, starting with the 2010 season, baseball schools will be allowed to schedule 24 dates, four of which may be tournaments. |
